This unique book tells the story of liberty through the lives of more than 65 men and women who made crucial contributions to liberty during the past 2,000 years.   Most had humble origins.

These people lived through tumultuous times including the crisis of the Roman Republic, the Reformation, the Thirty Years War, English Civil Wars, English Revolution, the American Revolution, French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, abolitionist movement, free trade movement, struggle for Irish emancipation, women?s rights movement, World War I, the Holocaust, the civil rights movement and the modern libertarian movement. A dozen of these people were exiled, another dozen were imprisoned, two were beheaded, and one was shot to death, but they helped achieve breakthroughs for liberty.

The stories are gathered chronologically in 10 groupings which offer revelations about important themes: natural rights; toleration; peace; self-help; individualism; economic liberty; spirit of liberty; dangers to liberty; protecting liberty; courage for liberty.

The Triumph of Liberty offers you much pleasure and inspiration. It's sure to make a cherished gift for family, friends and clients. Here are some comments:

-- David S. Landes, Professor of History, Harvard University, and author of The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, Unbound Prometheus and other books

* "In these jaded times, it is sometimes difficult to recall that human progress depends not only on technological wizardry, but on the courageous work of single individuals, motivated by their love of liberty and the creative forces of mind and imagination that it unleashes.  Jim Powell takes us on a biographical journey with some of our greatest historical figures who, for all their differences, are united by this single passion.  Here is one book that will make clear the human origins of our present freedom and prosperity."
-- Richard A. Epstein, James Parker Hall Distinguished Service Professor of Law, University of Chicago, and author of Takings, Principles of a Free Society and other books

*  "Jim Powell has written a fast-moving, zesty history of champions of liberty from Cicero to Thoreau, from Rabelais to Rand."
-- James Bovard, author of Lost Rights, Freedom in Chains and other books

* "An inspiring chronicle that will lift the spirits of freedom lovers everywhere.  As Jim Powell reminds us, liberty is not to be taken for granted.  An awesome book!"
-- George B.N. Ayittey, Professor of Economics, American University, author of Africa Betrayed, Africa in Chaos and other books

* Jim Powell has done yeoman's work assembling the ideas and arguments of the world's greatest liberty-oriented thinkers.  The Triumph of Liberty is vital to the teaching and understanding of American history and fundamental to a meaning of our nation's values and origins."
-- Walter E. Williams, John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics & Chairman of the Economics Department, George Mason University, and author of The State Against Blacks and other books

* "A wonderful reference for any lover of liberty.  Lift your spirits by reading a story each night.  I am giving copies to my children."
-- Randy E. Barnett, Austin B. Fletcher Professor, Boston University School of Law, author of The Structure of Liberty and other books

* "An inspiring narrative of people struggling to free themselves from limits -- intellectual and internal as well as tangible and external...readers will no doubt find that these tales will help maintain them in their own struggles and inspire them to seek fuller lives for themselves and others."
-- Kirkus Reviews [click here for complete review]

* "Powell traces the struggle for freedom from oppression, equality before the law, peace, social justice, toleration of thought, speech and individuality.  Along with familiar figures such as Erasmus, Jefferson, Franklin, Locke, Tocqueville, Thoreau and Mencken, he presents liberty-lovers who deserve to be better-known, including John Lilburne, and English pamphleteer who attacked taxes, censorship and the notorious Star Chamber, Hugo Grotius, a Dutch antiwar philosopher and the father of international law, and Lysander Spooner, a maverick 19th century American opponent of military conscription and intrusive big government...a rousing testament to the belief that one person can make a difference..."
-- Publisher's Weekly [click here for complete review]

* "If 'liberty is a rare and precious thing,' as Powell rightfully reminds us at the start of this book, then how did it become so ubiquitous in the West as to become a byword for it?  To answer this question, Powell explores 'the lives of remarkable individuals who made crucial contributions to liberty during the past two thousand years.'  And it is a delightfully motley crew, including such obvious defenders of liberty as Adam Smith, Lord Acton, and Frederic Bastiat, as well as dozens of others -- some well-known, some obscure, some surprising.  The Triumph of Liberty expertly weaves these different threads into the boisterous tapestry that is the history of freedom."
-- Religion and Liberty (Acton Institute), July/August 2000

* "The history of the last 2,000 years is replete with examples of men and women who have staked their lives, fortunes and sacred honor on the idea of human freedom. Beginning with Cicero, Powell offers both the broad outlines and the charming minutae of their lives in a manner useful both as inspiration and reference. The philosophers, the revolutionaries, the writers, artists, musicians, and leaders come to life on every page. So do their ideas."
-- free-market.net, "Freedom Book of the Month" [click here for complete review]

"What better way to tell the story of humankind's centuries-long struggle for freedom than through the lives of those who fought for it? Jim Powell's powerful THE TRIUMPH OF LIBERTY chronicles the times and trials of sixty-five men and women of the past two millennia, from the ancient Roman Republic through the American Revolution to the Civil Rights movement, freedom fighters in every epoch. A sweeping, inspiring survey."
